Airtime has always been about building communities in real time, and now we’re expanding that. Our latest release introduces live, public rooms for everyone. Whether you’re into makeup, hip hop, or just chatting, you’ll now find all kinds of rooms waiting for you on Airtime.
Drop into any live, public room, no invite necessary. Join in the conversation as it’s happening, send reactions, request to go live on stage, and more. Create and host your own room and share what you’re into. Want a little privacy? Make a private room to spend time with friends only. And now, you’ll be able to find and follow people on Airtime to see what they’re up to.
We’ve also improved the in-room experience with pinch and zoom. You can now control the placement and size of people who are live on video and media that’s playing. The layout you choose is up to you. With our dynamic room updates, you’ll also be able to see whenever someone joins you, or when the host makes a change to the room.
There’s lots that’s new in Airtime 5.1! We’re here to guide you along the way. You’ll find answers to some of the most common questions here:
- I had to update to the new version on iOS, but it isn’t working.
This error may happen for a limited number of people during the initial 5.1 release period. This is because the App Store slowly releases updates over a period of a few hours. Airtime version 5.1 should become available to you within an hour or two, so please check back again soon!
- What is the default privacy setting for a new room?
To help Airtime communities come together, any new room you create will be public by default. This means that it will show up in search and is discoverable by all other users on Airtime. All other users will be able to join your public room without an invite.
- Will my existing private rooms be made public?
No, your existing private rooms will remain private. If you create a new room, however, they will be public by default and therefore will show up in search and be discoverable by all other users on Airtime.
- How do I change my room’s privacy settings?
You can change your room's privacy settings at any time by following these steps:
- Enter the room and tap room name in the center of your screen.
- Tap on the pencil icon or tap "More" and tap "Edit Room Settings."
- Tap on "Privacy."
- Change the room type to Private.
- What is a “room host” and what can they do?
Hosts have access to more advanced features in a room than a normal room member. They can turn on their camera and mic, post media, control the stage, and edit the room’s settings—including removing you as a member. Be sure to choose people you trust to host any room you create.
If you’d like to change a room host to a room member instead, you can tap on their avatar and tap “Remove as Host.”
- Where can I find all of the rooms that I created?
Any room that you are a part of—either as a host or a member—can be found in the “My Rooms” tab.
- I’d like to re-join a room, but it’s no longer appearing in the app. How can I find it?
Rooms that are not currently live or active will not appear on the “Live Now” tab, but you can always find any room that you’re a member of under the “My Rooms” tab, or by searching for it.
Public rooms appear in the Live Now tab only when a host of the room is currently live in the app. If the host is no longer live, it will no longer appear in Live Now. You can, however, search for the room name to locate it again and join the room.
- How can I remove someone unwanted from my room?
We want Airtime to be a welcoming and inclusive environment. If for any reason a member of your room is making you uncomfortable, you have two options for controlling their access to your room: “kick out” or “ban.” Kicking a member out of the room removes them from the room, but depending on the room's privacy settings, they may be able to rejoin or be invited back by another member. Banning a member permanently removes them from the room and they will not be able to rejoin, or be invited back to the room at any point
To remove a member of a room you host:
- Tap on their avatar.
- Tap “Kick out User” to temporarily remove them or “Ban User” to permanently remove them.
- Someone was being very inappropriate in a room or said they are underage. How can I report them?
If someone is violating our Community Guidelines (which includes being under the age of 13), please follow these steps to immediately report them to our Trust & Safety team:
- Tap on their avatar.
- Tap on the three dots (...)
- Tap “Report User.”
- Select the most relevant category for the violation and provide any additional details you may want our team to know.
Members of our Trust & Safety team personally review every single report to ensure that our users are having the best possible experience on Airtime. You can learn more about the ways in which we protect our users in the Safety Center.
